Amazon AI Wrote a Wrong Description: How to Fix It
You check your Amazon listing and the product description says something you never wrote. The wording is generic, some details are wrong, and your carefully written copy has been replaced. This is increasingly common as Amazon expands its use of automated content generation across the catalogue. Here is what is happening and what you can do about it.
Where auto-generated descriptions come from
Amazon populates listing fields from multiple sources. Your submitted content is one source. Others include the brand owner's catalogue feed, other sellers on the same ASIN, manufacturer data, and Amazon's own automated systems. When Amazon's systems detect that a field is empty, incomplete, or inconsistent with other data it holds, it may fill or replace the content automatically.
The description field is particularly vulnerable because many sellers leave it blank (relying on A+ Content to replace the standard description on the detail page) or submit a minimal version. An empty or thin description is an invitation for Amazon's systems to generate one.
This is different from another seller editing a shared listing, though the result can look the same. If you want to understand the broader issue of unauthorised listing changes, the listing changes guide covers all the scenarios.
Step 1: Check what Amazon currently holds
Before you submit a correction, check what Seller Central shows as the current content. Go to Inventory > Manage All Inventory, find the product, and click Edit. Look at the description field under the "Description" or "Vital Info" tab (the exact location depends on your product type).
Compare this to what appears on the live detail page. They may be different. The detail page shows whichever version Amazon's systems chose as the "winning" contribution, which is not always the same as what your Seller Central edit page shows. If the detail page description is wrong but your edit page still shows your original content, the problem is that another source is winning the contribution. If both show the wrong content, your original submission has been overwritten entirely.
Step 2: Submit your correct content via flat file
The most reliable way to reassert your content is a flat file upload. A flat file submission is processed differently from a manual edit in Seller Central and often carries higher authority, especially when it uses the correct product type template with all required fields populated.
- Download the correct category listing template from Inventory > Add Products via Upload > Download Template.
- Fill in the SKU, your corrected description, and all other required fields. Do not leave optional fields blank if you have content for them. A complete submission is more likely to be accepted than a partial one.
- Set the "update_delete" column to "PartialUpdate" if you are only changing specific fields, or "Update" for a full submission.
- Upload via Inventory > Add Products via Upload. Check the processing report after 15 to 30 minutes for any errors.
If the flat file upload returns errors, the flat file error guide covers the most common issues and how to resolve them.
Step 3: Open a case if the correction does not stick
If your flat file submission is accepted (no errors in the processing report) but the wrong description reappears within 24 to 48 hours, another source is overriding your contribution. At this point, you need to open a Seller Central support case.
Be specific in the case. Include the ASIN, the SKU, the exact field that is being overwritten, the content you submitted, and the incorrect content that appeared instead. Ask the support agent to escalate to the catalogue team if the first response is a generic troubleshooting script. The case management guide has more detail on writing effective cases.
Step 4: Use Brand Registry to increase your authority
If you own the brand and are not yet enrolled in Amazon Brand Registry, enrolling is the single most effective step you can take. Brand Registry gives you higher content authority on listings under your registered trademark, which means your submissions are prioritised over contributions from other sellers, resellers, and automated systems.
Brand Registry does not make you immune to overrides. Amazon retains the ability to modify any listing for compliance or customer experience reasons. But it significantly reduces the frequency and makes your support cases stronger, because you can reference your brand owner status.
If you are a reseller (not the brand owner), your content authority is inherently lower. In that case, your best option is a flat file submission with accurate, complete data. If the brand owner is actively managing the listing, their contributions will generally take precedence over yours.
Preventing auto-generated content in the first place
Amazon's automated systems are more likely to generate content for incomplete listings. The best prevention is completeness.
- Fill in every field on your listing, including the standard description, even if you use A+ Content. A+ Content replaces the description on the detail page for Brand Registered sellers, but the underlying description field still exists in the catalogue. If it is empty, Amazon may fill it.
- Use the correct product type template. Submitting data through the wrong template can result in fields being mapped incorrectly or ignored, which leaves gaps for auto-generation.
- Keep your backend search terms populated. Empty backend fields do not directly trigger description overrides, but they signal an incomplete listing, which may lower your overall content authority. The backend search terms guide covers best practices.
- Monitor your listings regularly. Catching an override within days is easier to fix than discovering it months later after Amazon's systems have reinforced the auto-generated version.
What about A+ Content descriptions?
A+ Content (Enhanced Brand Content) is separate from the standard product description. A+ Content is displayed on the detail page below the bullet points for Brand Registered sellers, and it replaces the standard description visually. However, the standard description still exists in the catalogue and is used by search engines, some third-party tools, and Amazon's own indexing.
If Amazon auto-generates a standard description, it will not directly affect your A+ Content. But the auto-generated description may appear in search results, in external shopping engines, and on the mobile app in contexts where A+ Content is not rendered. It is worth fixing even if your A+ Content is unaffected.
Frequently asked questions
Why did Amazon change my product description without my permission?
Amazon can auto-generate or overwrite listing content when it determines that the current content is missing, incomplete, or does not match its catalogue data. This can come from Amazon's own AI systems, from contributions by other sellers on the same listing, or from catalogue data provided by the brand owner or manufacturer. If you are not the brand owner on that ASIN, your content authority is lower and overrides are more likely.
How do I fix an AI-generated description on my Amazon listing?
Submit your correct description via a flat file upload (Inventory > Add Products via Upload in Seller Central) or through the Listings Items API if you use third-party tools. A flat file submission with the correct product type template is the most reliable method. If the override does not stick after 24 to 48 hours, open a Seller Central support case referencing the ASIN, the field that was overwritten, and the content you submitted.
Does Brand Registry stop Amazon from changing my listing?
Brand Registry gives you higher content authority over listings under your registered brand, which means your submissions are more likely to win when competing contributions exist. It does not guarantee that Amazon will never overwrite your content. Amazon retains the right to modify any listing for compliance, accuracy, or customer experience reasons. However, Brand Registry significantly reduces the frequency of unwanted changes.
Can I opt out of Amazon AI-generated descriptions?
There is no explicit opt-out setting for AI-generated content. The most effective prevention is to ensure that every field on your listing is filled with your own content. Amazon is more likely to auto-generate content for fields that are empty or minimal. A complete listing with all fields populated gives Amazon less reason to intervene.
How do I know if Amazon AI wrote my product description?
Check "Manage All Inventory" in Seller Central and compare the live description to what you originally submitted. If the description contains phrasing you did not write, especially generic language that could apply to many products in the category, it may have been auto-generated. Amazon does not currently label auto-generated content in the seller-facing tools, so the comparison is the only reliable method.
Will Amazon keep reverting my description after I fix it?
It can happen repeatedly if the underlying cause is not addressed. If another seller or a catalogue feed is contributing different content with higher authority, your submission may be overwritten again. Brand Registry, a flat file submission with the correct product type, and a support case escalation are the three tools available to establish your content as the authoritative version.
